This past weekend, the Mann Art Gallery was buzzing with energy, laughter, and conversation as we celebrated the opening reception of Marcy Friesen’s exhibition Shoot the Breeze. Visitors of all ages joined us to experience Marcy’s playful, thoughtful, and deeply personal works, and the gallery was filled with stories, smiles, and shared curiosity.

A highlight of the afternoon was the special conversation between Marcy Friesen and her mentor, Ruth Cuthand. The two artists reflected on their practices, the mentorship that began in 2018, and the power of storytelling through beading. Their dialogue offered insights into Marcy’s creative process and the ways she transforms ordinary objects—like cigarettes, Bepsi cans, and walleye—into pieces that are both humorous and meaningful.

From Marcy’s Smoked Fish series, inspired by her father and cherished fishing trips, to her beaded cigarettes, which explore memory, reflection, and resilience, every work invited visitors to slow down and engage. The conversation with Ruth highlighted how mentorship, heritage, and personal experiences shape artistic practice and storytelling.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended and made the opening reception such a memorable day. Your engagement and curiosity brought the exhibition to life!

If you weren’t able to join us, there’s still time to visit Shoot the Breeze—on view until January 10, 2026. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore Marcy Friesen’s vibrant and heartfelt world of beadwork, photography, and storytelling.
