In 2025, the Mann Art Gallery Board of Directors committed to something deeply important: strengthening the foundation of our organization so that we can continue to serve our community with clarity, purpose, and sustainability.

This year was not simply about meetings and motions. It was about growth. It was about learning. It was about stepping back to ensure we are governing well so that the Gallery can thrive long into the future.

A Year of Governance and Strategic Focus

The Board began the year by investing in governance education. Directors engaged in focused learning to better understand their fiduciary responsibilities, policy governance roles, and long-term strategic oversight. This work clarified the distinction between governance and operations and strengthened confidence at the Board table.

From there, the work expanded into a comprehensive strategic planning process. What was initially expected to be completed earlier in the year evolved into a thoughtful, multi-month journey. New Board members joined at the Annual General Meeting, and it was important that they were fully onboarded and included in shaping the Gallery’s future.

The planning process included:

  • Multiple facilitated planning sessions

  • Community focus groups

  • Public surveys

  • Additional Board working meetings

Board members who participated fully completed 23 hours of governance and strategic planning training. The level of engagement was strong, and discussions were honest, constructive, and forward-thinking.

Navigating Financial Realities

During the same period, the Gallery formally requested an increase to its 2026 operating budget from the City of Prince Albert. The outcome of this request had significant implications for the scale and implementation of the strategic plan.

When the request was not approved, the Board gained clear financial parameters within which to move forward. While this required adjustments, it ultimately strengthened the final plan by grounding it in confirmed resources and realistic priorities. The extended timeline allowed for deeper alignment and a clearer path forward.

An Investment in Long-Term Sustainability

An unexpected but positive outcome of this work was the depth of unity and clarity that emerged. Governance capacity increased. Roles became clearer. Strategic priorities were sharpened. The Board developed stronger confidence in its ability to steward the Gallery responsibly and thoughtfully.

This was not just a planning exercise. It was an investment in the long-term sustainability of the Mann Art Gallery and in our responsibility to the artists and community we serve.

Thank You to Community Initiatives Fund

This important work would not have been possible without the generous support of the Community Initiatives Fund. Their investment in governance training and strategic development enabled the Board to access professional facilitation and dedicate the time necessary to do this work well.

By supporting strong governance, the Community Initiatives Fund has strengthened not only the Board, but the entire Gallery community.

We are grateful for their partnership and for their commitment to building resilient, community-based organizations across Saskatchewan.

As we move into the next chapter, we do so with clarity, strengthened leadership, and renewed commitment to our mission.

The future of the Mann Art Gallery is grounded in thoughtful governance and guided by a shared vision for meaningful impact.
