On Friday, November 14th, the John V. Hicks Gallery welcomed community members, artists, and supporters for the opening reception of Randi Lalonde’s exhibition Space to Surface. The afternoon was filled with warmth, thoughtful conversation, and a deep appreciation for Lalonde’s meditative and process-driven approach to art-making.

Mann Art Gallery Artistic Director Jesse Campbell was in attendance and shared reflections on the event and the exhibition.

“We did a little walk and talk through the exhibition, speaking about her overall practice and discussing the groupings of works in the show. She shared the background behind her work, how it has largely been informed by the time she has spent at the Arts Centre, specifically in the workshop and classes she has taken with George Glenn. In a sense the show is very much about the process of making art, because that's what gives her the most satisfaction."— Jesse Campbell, Artistic Director, Mann Art Gallery

Exploring a Practice Rooted in Observation and Process

During the walk-through, guests had the opportunity to hear Lalonde speak about her evolving relationship with light, material, and place, themes deeply embedded in her work. Many pieces in Space to Surface were created in the studio directly across from the gallery, making this exhibition particularly meaningful both for the artist and for the community that has watched her practice grow.

The Mother Tree series, created using charcoal from burnt logs in her daughter’s yard, drew particular interest for its intimate connection to family, memory, and the invisible networks that bind us. Other works reflected her ongoing exploration of slow looking, shifting light, and the dialogue between mark-making and environment.

A Gathering of Community & Creativity

Guests enjoyed beautiful refreshments provided by the Prince Albert Council for the Arts, adding to the warm, community-centered feel of the afternoon.

The conversations flowed easily, visitors discussed technique, process, and the quiet sense of rhythm in Lalonde’s work. Many attendees spent extended time with the pieces, embracing the exhibition’s invitation to slow down and look closely.

On View Until November 23

Space to Surface remains on display at the John V. Hicks Gallery until November 23, and we encourage anyone who hasn’t had the chance to visit to experience this thoughtful and beautifully crafted exhibition.

A huge thank you to Randi Lalonde, our community partners, and everyone who joined us for this memorable event.
