The 9th Annual High School Juried Art Show (HSJAS) is scheduled for April 7 - June 6, 2020, in the Project & Education Studio Galleries of the Mann Art Gallery. The Gallery is free to visit. The Opening Reception & Awards Night, which was originally scheduled for April 9, 2020, has been POSTPONED and will be RESCHEDULED for the end of May to promote social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic, though the risk to Prince Albert residents remains low.
This year presents a unique situation as schools have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the Saskatchewan Teacher's Federation has job action underway which impacts extracurricular activities. The HSJAS exists for two purposes: to provide teenage/young adult artists with a venue to exhibition their artwork to the community, and to celebrate the artistic accomplishments of students and the hard work of their teachers in school classrooms. This year, we invite young adults to submit their artwork independently to the gallery (in previous years, students had the option of submitting their art independently or teachers collected the artworks and volunteered their time by delivering it to the gallery on behalf of their schools). Here are the details for independent submissions, below:
We invite all high school students (grades 9 - 12) and teenagers ages 15-19 in Prince Albert and area to submit work to the 9th Annual High School Juried Art Show!
The exhibition will take place in the Project Space & Education Studio Galleries within the Mann Art Gallery from April 7th to June 6th, 2020. Teenagers ages 15-19 or students in grades 9 - 12 in Prince Albert & surrounding area are invited to submit *two (2) artworks per student* (this year, 2020, only)*.
The High School Juried Art Show has free admission and is open to the public Tuesday to Friday, 10 am - 5 pm and Saturday, 12pm – 5pm (closed Sundays and Stat Holidays) From April 7th to June 6th. The Opening Reception and Awards Night (originally scheduled April 9, 2020) has been CANCELLED and will be RESCHEDULED to late May 2020.
Process & Entry Rules:
Submit the Art: Tuesday, March 23rd to Saturday, March 28, 2020. Artists should submit their artworks independently, by bringing them directly to the Mann Art Gallery. Artworks must be dropped off at the Mann Art Gallery between 10 am - 5 pm Tuesday - Friday, or on Saturday from 12:00pm to 5:00 pm.
Submission Standards & Rules
A. This year only, as we expected lower than average submissions, we are allowing youth artists to submit TWO (2) artworks each. In other years it has been only one (1) work.
B. Label: Each artwork must have the following information on the back of each artwork: artist's first and last name, title, medium and grade or age. If you choose, you may put the name of your school or art class on as well. Please ensure text is easily legible. New this year: You can price your artwork! Include a price with your email address on the label so potential buyers can contact you about purchasing your work. The gallery will not take commission on teenage artwork.
C. Type of Art: All mediums are encouraged; work must be original in design (not created from a pattern charted by another artist/designer or reproduced without alteration from another artist's work, but traditional patterns are allowed); work may have been produced inside or outside of school or art classes; work must have been produced within the past year (2019).
D. Jury Selection & Display: MAG staff will make selections from the submissions to be included in the exhibition. As space is limited, we are unable to guarantee that each student will have a artwork juried into the show. We will let artists know as soon as possible before the exhibition which artworks will be included in the juried show. We will temporarily frame, hang and light works. Artworks will be juried for 5 cash prizes which will be presented at the Awards Night.
E. Contract Note: Images of youth artworks included in the exhibition may be reproduced by MAG staff on HSJAS invitations, HSJAS posters, and for purposes of documenting and promoting the HSJAS exhibition program. By submitting artwork, the youth artist agrees to these conditions.
3. Reception & Awards Night: Please join us with your fellow artists, family and friends, for the exhibition reception & awards night, which will take place in late May. The date will be announced soon as it has been rescheduled. This will be a joint reception for the Northern Saskatchewan Artists and The Influence of the Woodland School showing in the Main Gallery of the MAG. The work of artists John McDonald and Donna The Strange (Donna Langhorn), both of whom are Indigenous, will be on display. Michele Boutin, the curator, will give a brief artist talk before the High School Juried Art Show awards are presented. Dress code is casual, from street clothes to semi-formal. Awards will be announced and given to outstanding artists.
4. Pick-Up Artworks: Artwork is to be picked up at the gallery between June 10th to June 13th, 10 - 5 pm Tuesday - Friday and 12 – 5 pm, Saturday, at the Mann Art Gallery.
