About

In spring of 2021, Leah decided to start a mentorship with local Métis artist and visual arts educator, Ashley Smith. This apprentice and mentor relationship gave Leah the opportunity to transfer cultural and artistic knowledge within the community. Leah and Danielle created a 3-part series of temporary public art installations in the city of Prince Albert. The intent was to create highly visible, accessible, and educational contemporary Indigenous (Métis) art in public spaces in the city, celebrating the Métis culture and teaching youth and emerging artists values and techniques. Leah worked closely with Ashley, and taught her how to plan, produce, install, and implement interactive public art installations.

Leah and Ashley installed bison and horses in the front of the Mann Art Gallery with help from community members, elder Liz Sette and elder Curtis Breaton. A small gathering came out to watch as they hammered them into the ground while discussing the Métis values written by Leah Dorion. The cardboard bison and horses were painted by community members.

Métis Lobstick
August 17 - September 30, 2021

Leah and Ashley facilitated a lobstick decorating workshop before the installation which allowed community members to help carve, wood burn, and paint the contemporary lobstick. The artists installed the Métis Lobstick in the flowerbed in front of the E.A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts and Mann Art Gallery.
