Mann Art Gallery Board Governance

In the fall of 2011, the Board underwent intensive governance training and policy revision. The governance model adopted is the Carver Model. A new policy book has captured, updated, and replaced previously existing policies in order that this governance model can be used effectively, particulary in the areas of monitoring and accountability.

The Carver Governance Model

The lines of authority and accountability are very clearly drawn in the Carver model.

The policies are organized into four categories, clearly describing the roles and responsibilites of the Board and the CEO - the Director Curator. The Board's work is described in Governance Process policies and in Board/CEO relationship policies. The work of the Director Curator is laid out in the Ends (what needs to happen) and the Executive Limitations policies.

Monitoring and Accountability

In addition, the structured monitoring process ensures that all policy is monitored at least on an annual basis. The monitoring process is designed to ensure that existing policy is adequate, appropriate, and is being followed.
